Broforce Review - Grab Some Bros and Save The Day

Get patriotic in this all-American indie platformer.

July 22, 2016 by Morgan Shaver

Broforce is a run-and-gun indie platform game developed by Free Lives and published by Devolver Digital. In the game, players take on the role of the enigmatic “Bro” as he attempts to save his comrades. Embracing the art style of other retro platformers (vaguely reminiscent of Contra), players will have the ability to recruit a Bro from Broforce's extensive selection. The Bros are parodies of movie action heroes, all with Bro-themed names, including Brommando and the Broniversal Soldier.

Each Bro can be unlocked by freeing him from his respective prison in the game’s dangerous, explosive levels. You see, your Bros are held hostage, and it’s up to you to rescue them, thereby adding these guys to your ever-growing team of high-octane masculinity. Each hero in Broforce has his own play style. Some, like Rambro, come equipped with an assault rifle, while others (the one paying homage to The Terminator) replace the assault rifle for a mini gun.

The game’s difficulty feels challenging, but we’re betting you can take it. While the difficulty is dependent on the random Bros you unlock, the maps provide a little boost in the way of strategy. As you wind your way through each map, you’ll come in contact with various bosses. Whether you beat them to a bloody pulp or fill them with lead, your intense combat will constantly change. This level of variety prevents the game from becoming dull, and shifts up the difficulty to always keep you on your toes.

You’re strongly encouraged to rescue all hostages in each Broforce level; after all, you’re an all-American hero! But you can still progress forward in the game even if you have to leave a man or two behind. Broforce is a game that requires a lot of attention, so no dozing, soldier! After all, there’s no shortage of explosives, enemies, and bullets flying through the air. This can feel a little overwhelming at times, but that’s one of the novelties of Broforce. It’s an astute homage to action films, the ones where the hero sets off an explosion and walks away in slow motion without ever looking back.

You have to grow comfortable with the explosive frenzy of Broforce, and power through your foes in order to swoop in and bring your Bros to safety. Sadly, you’re not unstoppable, and are capable of dying in various ways as you navigate your way through Broforce. The slim pickings when it comes to checkpoints can be frustrating during certain stages of the game, and having to restart your action-packed mission over and over can be a bit of a mood killer.

But overall, Broforce is a nonstop, action-packed thrill ride that will leave you feeling like you’re a legit action hero. Anyone can be a Bro in Broforce, and those who enjoy watching a good action flick or two will find a lot to love in this game. Whether it’s paying tribute to Rambo, Alien, Robocop, or Judge Dredd, Broforce has no shortage of seriously fun throwbacks, especially when it comes to its main theme, which will leave you feeling ramped up and oh so patriotic!
