Dark Fantasy FPS 'Witchfire' Revealed with Horrifying Teaser Trailer
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter developers The Astronauts are trying their hand at shooters with their latest project, Witchfire. Witchfire was announced during The Game Awards with a creepy reveal trailer, which you can watch below.
Based on the gameplay teaser, Witchfire already appears to be vastly different from the studio’s previous narrative game, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Witchfire is described as a dark fantasy shooter set in a gothic-inspired environment riddled with horrifying monsters and demonic Bloodborne-esque skeleton creatures that are sure to get your heart pumping.
The team’s shift toward the shooter genre shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. The core founders of The Astronauts were also creative leads on the Bulletstorm and Painkiller games, meaning the developers already have plenty of shooter-making experience under their belts.
“While Witchfire is also a shooter, we’re aiming to make a game unlike anything we have done in the past, both in tone and in game mechanics,” says Adrian Chmielarz, founder and resident game designer at The Astronauts.
Witchfire is being developed in Unreal Engine 4 and will utilize the same photogrammetry tech the team used in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. This technology allows the designers to 3D scan real-world objects to be used as digital assets in-game, which helps give the game environment a more “natural, organic look and feel.”
There is no set release date for Witchfire, nor is there any confirmation of platform availability beyond PC. The Astronauts chose to reveal Witchfire early to let fans have a taste of what they’ll be working on in the months ahead. We’ll be sure to update you with more Witchfire details as soon as new information is revealed.
